Rod-cone signal interference in the retina shapes perception in primates

چکیده

Linking the activity of neurons, circuits and synapses to human behavior is a fundamental goal neuroscience. Meeting this challenging, in part because behavior, particularly perception, often masks complexity underlying neural circuits, significant behavioral differences between primates animals like mice flies which genetic manipulations are relatively common. Here we relate circuit-level processing rod cone signals non-human primate retina known break normal seamlessness vision – surprising inability see high contrast flickering lights under specific conditions. We use electrophysiological recordings perceptual experiments identify key mechanisms that shape retinal integration rod- cone-generated signals. then incorporate these mechanistic insights into predicti\ve model accurately captures cancellation cone-mediated responses can explain insensitivity flicker.

Rod-cone convergence in the retina

There is a swahili adage that says: Mtu ni watu. In English this translates to A person is people. I am because there have been so many people that have invested in me. This thesis is dedicated to my immediate family, my extended family, friends, life group and work colleagues. To my father, Mr. Joshua Muchungi, though you be not with us, thank you for blessing me. I do feel your support and pr...

The Circadian Clock in the Retina Controls Rod-Cone Coupling

Although rod and cone photoreceptor cells in the vertebrate retina are anatomically connected or coupled by gap junctions, a type of electrical synapse, rod-cone electrical coupling is thought to be weak. Using tracer labeling and electrical recording in the goldfish retina and tracer labeling in the mouse retina, we show that the retinal circadian clock, and not the retinal response to the vis...

Simulating Light Adaptation in the Retina with Rod-Cone Coupling

The retina performs various key operations on incoming images in order to facilitate higher-level visual processing. Since the retina outperforms existing image enhancing techniques, it follows that computational simulations with biological plausibility are best suited to inform their design and development, as well as help us better understand retina functionality. Recently, it has been determ...

Temporal analysis of electroretinographic responses in fishes with rod-dominated and mixed rod-cone retina.

Photoreceptor content of fish retinas could be accessed by comparative electroretinographic (ERG) studies using flickering light stimuli that could separate rod-mediated vision where critical flicker frequency (CFF, frequency when the eye loses its ability to resolve individual light pulses) is usually less than 15 Hz from cone-mediated vision. Four fish species inhabiting different photic envi...

Adaptive Signal Detection in Auto-Regressive Interference with Gaussian Spectrum

A detector for the case of a radar target with known Doppler and unknown complex amplitude in complex Gaussian noise with unknown parameters has been derived. The detector assumes that the noise is an Auto-Regressive (AR) process with Gaussian autocorrelation function which is a suitable model for ground clutter in most scenarios involving airborne radars. The detector estimates the unknown...
